At its annual Connect event, Meta launched its new Ray-Ban Display smart glasses - complete with a wristband controller and built-in HUD display—aiming to fuse style with AI-powered utility. The device, priced at around $799, is set to hit stores on September 30.
However, the unveiling was marred by several live demonstration glitches. One demo showed the AI assistant failing to respond properly to voice commands during a cooking segment, prompting Meta executives to blame unstable WiFi. Another hiccup came when Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was unable to answer a video call using gesture control via the wristband.
This product debut comes at a sensitive time for Meta, as the company is under scrutiny for its handling of child safety on social media and virtual reality platforms. Critics and lawmakers have raised concerns about inadequate research, content moderation, and internal studies indicating risks to minors.
