Human rights organizations and Bangladeshi authorities are raising serious concerns over reports that India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has forcibly deported Indian Muslim citizens—some at gunpoint—to Bangladesh, without proper documentation or legal proceedings .
According to rights groups, thousands—primarily low-income Muslims—have been detained across states like Assam, Tripura, and West Bengal under operations targeting alleged illegal migrants. Dozens were reportedly coerced into admitting Bangladeshi nationality, then expelled across the border. Victims recount experiences of physical abuse, deprivation, and threats during forced deportation.
Bangladesh’s government has lodged formal protests, stating it refuses to accept these individuals after citizenship verification, citing violations of international and bilateral protocols. Several deported individuals returned to India with the assistance of week‑long diplomatic flag‑meetings.
In Assam, deportation efforts have intensified following tribunal rulings, with authorities pushing back over 300 individuals since May. Rights activists warn that the process disproportionately affects Bengali-speaking Muslims, including those with valid documentation, and undermines appeal processes.
Critics, including the CPI(M), argue these practices reflect communal bias and violate citizens’ due process rights.
