As monsoon showers sweep across cities and countryside alike, many wonder whether rainwater benefits or harms the skin. Dermatologists suggest the answer depends heavily on location and exposure.
In clean, rural regions, rainwater is soft and free of pollutants, offering mild hydration and a refreshing sensation. The increased humidity during rainfall can also help retain skin moisture and improve elasticity. Additionally, the calming effect of rain can reduce stress, indirectly promoting better skin health by lowering cortisol levels.
However, urban rain is a different story. In heavily polluted environments, rain often contains particulate matter, heavy metals, and acids from the atmosphere. This can strip away the skin’s natural oils, disrupt pH balance, and lead to dryness, irritation, or breakouts. Prolonged dampness, especially when clothes and skin remain wet, also increases the risk of fungal infections and bacterial growth.
Experts advise rinsing off with clean water after exposure, applying a gentle cleanser, and moisturizing with lightweight, non-comedogenic products. Using sunscreen remains crucial even on cloudy days, as UV rays penetrate through overcast skies.
