A ferry carrying 65 people sank in the Bali Strait on Thursday, killing at least four passengers. The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya went down 25 minutes after departing Ketapang port in East Java's Banyuwangi for Gilimanuk port in northern Bali.
Twenty-three people have been rescued, with survivors found adrift in a lifeboat. The vessel was transporting 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles including 14 trucks on the popular Java-Bali route.
Search operations continue with rescue boats deployed from Surabaya. The cause remains unknown. Indonesia's maritime sector has faced recurring accidents due to lax safety standards, with previous incidents including a 2018 Lake Toba ferry disaster that killed over 150 people.
