New Bill says no more cash in online gaming!

The Indian government is preparing sweeping changes to the country’s online gaming sector with a proposed ban on all money-based gaming transactions. (India Today) According to sources, the upcoming Online Gaming Bill seeks to strictly prohibit real-money involvement in digital platforms, covering popular categories such as fantasy sports, poker, rummy, and esports wagering.

Officials argue the move is designed to combat growing concerns about gambling addiction, financial losses, and fraud in the fast-expanding sector, which currently engages millions of users nationwide. Industry data indicates that online gaming has seen explosive growth in India, but the lack of comprehensive regulation has created risks for both players and financial systems.

The bill may also introduce a robust monitoring framework, with financial institutions and digital payment platforms tasked to block money transfers linked to gaming apps. If enacted, this could disrupt several major companies that have invested heavily in real-money gaming.

While the government frames it as a protective step, critics warn that such a blanket ban may stifle innovation, push players to unregulated offshore platforms, and trigger job losses in the gaming industry.
