As Bangladesh prepares to hold its 13th national parliamentary election on February 12, 2026, the focus isn’t just on who wins power but on whether the process will be inclusive and safe for all communities. The Hindu minority — around 8 per cent of the population — has reported a surge in mob attacks, intimidation and targeted violence in recent months, heightening fears ahead of polling day.
These safety concerns come against a backdrop of election-related unrest countrywide: data from police sources indicate hundreds of violent incidents since the election schedule was announced, including clashes, injuries and a handful of deaths tied to political tensions. Despite the deployment of nearly a million security personnel, millions of voters — including minorities — remain cautious about participating fully if they feel vulnerable at polling centres.
Civil society groups and human rights advocates argue that the election’s legitimacy depends not just on turnout but on ensuring minority communities can vote without fear of harassment or reprisal. As Bangladeshi leaders stress law-and-order plans and advanced surveillance measures, international observers and neighbouring countries, including India, are watching closely for signs of fairness, inclusion and stability in a vote that could shape the nation’s democratic trajectory.
