Who would've thought? In a year filled with global challenges and political turmoil, the word ‘brat’ has unexpectedly taken the spotlight as Collins Dictionary's Word of the Year 2024.

This year, ‘brat’ has taken on a whole new, rather chic meaning. It's now associated with a confident, independent, and somewhat hedonistic attitude.   

But how did this happen? Well, it all started with the pop sensation Charli XCX and her album, ‘Brat.’ This album, released in June 2024, quickly became a cultural phenomenon, sparking a trend known as ‘brat summer.’ Suddenly, being a ‘brat’ wasn't a negative thing anymore; it was a badge of honour. It was about embracing individuality, self-expression, and living life to the fullest.   

So, in an exciting turn of events. A word that was once considered an insult has now become a symbol of youth culture and rebellion.

It's evidence to the ever-evolving nature of language and how words can take on new meanings.   

Whatever the reason, ‘brat’ has certainly made its mark in 2024. And while it may not be the most profound or significant word of the year, it's definitely one of the most unexpected.
