On March 6, 2025, a South Korean KF-16 fighter jet, during a routine training exercise, mistakenly released eight MK-82 bombs over Pocheon, a city near the North Korean border. The incident resulted in injuries to eight individuals—six civilians and two soldiers—with two civilians reported in serious condition.
The bombs caused significant damage, impacting three houses, a Catholic church, and a greenhouse. The South Korean Air Force expressed deep regret over the mishap, announcing the formation of a committee to investigate the cause and assess the extent of the damages. They have also committed to providing compensation and necessary support to the victims.
This accident occurred amidst joint live-fire exercises between South Korean and U.S. forces, part of the annual Freedom Shield drills aimed at enhancing readiness against regional threats. Residents in Pocheon have previously voiced concerns over the proximity of military training grounds to civilian areas, highlighting the potential dangers associated with such exercises.
