At the Cannes Film Festival, acclaimed filmmaker Wes Anderson took a jab at former US President Donald Trump's proposed 100% tariff on foreign made films. While promoting his upcoming espionage comedy The Phoenician Scheme, Anderson quipped, “Can you hold up the movie in customs? It doesn't ship that way,” drawing laughter from the press.
Trump, via Truth Social, had earlier claimed Hollywood is “dying a fast death” and called for heavy tariffs on movies produced outside the U.S. Anderson, whose film was partially shot in Germany, mocked the practicality of such a move, adding, “Does that mean he takes all the money?”
His satirical response underscores the creative community's resistance to politicized interference in global cinema. With an ensemble cast including Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Riz Ahmed, The Phoenician Scheme is already generating buzz for both its story and the press room drama.
