A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, shaking buildings, collapsing roads, and sending tremors as far as China, Thailand, and India. The epicenter was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing, with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
In Bangkok, Thailand, a 30-story under-construction tower collapsed, killing at least three people and trapping over 80 workers under the rubble. Authorities have declared the city a disaster area. Meanwhile, Myanmar's ruling military has declared a state of emergency, with hospitals overwhelmed by casualties.
Tremors were also felt in Vietnam, Kolkata, and Yunnan, China, where Beijing's quake agency reported it as a 7.9 magnitude quake. As rescue operations intensify and Myanmar seeks international aid, the region braces for aftershocks and further devastation.
