Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Bakrid, is one of the most significant Islamic festivals.
It is observed on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. In 2025, the festival is expected to fall on June 7 or June 8, depending on the crescent moon sighting. Countries like India, Pakistan, and Indonesia will attempt to sight the moon on May 28, 2025. If visible, Dhul Hijjah will begin on May 29.
The festival commemorates the deep devotion of Prophet Ibrahim, who was ready to sacrifice his son Ismail on Allah's command. Pleased with his faith, Allah replaced his son with a goat. Hence, Muslims offer Qurbani (animal sacrifice) on this day.
The sacrificed meat is divided into three parts - one for the poor, one for relatives, and one for the family - symbolizing charity, unity, and sharing. Eid-ul-Adha teaches sacrifice, compassion, and devotion.
