Delhi braces for 44°C heatwave; IMD issues yellow alert

New Delhi is set to endure an intense heatwave in the coming week, with temperatures expected to soar to a sweltering 44 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The capital has already been reeling under oppressive heat conditions, and this rise in mercury is expected to further strain public health and infrastructure.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for the city, warning residents to take necessary precautions, particularly the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Officials have advised limiting outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours and increasing fluid intake to prevent dehydration and heatstroke.

The intense heat is being attributed to dry northwesterly winds and clear skies, which allow maximum solar radiation. While no immediate rainfall is predicted, light showers may provide marginal relief later in the week.

Hospitals have reported a rise in heat-related illnesses, prompting the Delhi government to activate emergency response systems and water distribution efforts across vulnerable localities. Schools are also monitoring the situation, with some considering shortened hours or suspension of outdoor activities.

As Delhi braces for this heatwave, authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant and adopt heat-safety measures to mitigate health risks.
