Electric Shock in a Good Way! Maharashtra Cuts Power Tariffs for the First Time Ever!

Maharashtra has announced an unprecedented 26% reduction in electricity tariffs over five years, starting with an immediate 10% cut—the first such reduction in the state's history.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the landmark decision, crediting the Maharashtra State Electricity Regulatory Commission for approving the utility's petition. The cuts will benefit all consumer categories, with 70% of households using under 100 units monthly receiving maximum relief.

Over 45 lakh farmers and urban consumers will benefit from the move. Smart meter users get an additional 10% daytime discount, while solar power generators receive extra incentives.

The reduction stems from Maharashtra's shift toward renewable energy, which is lowering power procurement costs. The state is aggressively implementing its solar agricultural scheme, targeting 16,000 MW of decentralized solar capacity by December 2026. This marks a historic departure from traditional tariff hike requests.
