Athangudi tiles also known as Chettinad or Karaikudi tiles originate from Athangudi village in Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu. This five-century-old craft is woven into the region’s heritage and livelihoods, with generations of families preserving this vibrant tradition.
These handcrafted cement tiles are composed of locally sourced sand, cement, and natural pigments. Artisans mix these materials, pour them into molds set over glass, apply geometric or floral stencils, and sun-dry them. The result: tiles with a distinct glossy finish achieved without kilns making the craft eco-friendly and sustainable.
Beyond aesthetics, the tiles play a functional role in Chettinad architecture cool underfoot, moisture-resistant, and built to endure. Different patterns often demarcate courtyards, rooms, and corridors in grand Chettinad mansions, making them an integral design element.
Though the rise of mass-produced alternatives led to a decline, recent interest in sustainable design and heritage revival has reignited demand. Athangudi tiles are reclaiming their place in boutique architecture and global interiors, offering both beauty and cultural resonance.
