Delhi is witnessing unusually severe traffic gridlock across key corridors as Diwali approaches.
The usual choke points are stretched to breaking point: Ring Road and Outer Ring Road in South Delhi, Mathura Road between Pragati Maidan and the Badarpur border, Aurobindo Marg, Barapullah elevated road, DND Flyway, and stretches toward Ghaziabad and Noida are all reportedly clogged.
Part of the problem: a crane breakdown at Andrews Ganj Flyover disrupted flow on the Ring Road stretch from Moolchand toward AIIMS, compounding the congestion. The traffic pressure has extended into neighboring cities—Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida and Ghaziabad are also affected.
Commuters vent their frustration online. One person said she’s been stuck in one spot for over two hours; others called emergency services multiple times without response. In response, Delhi Police canceled all leaves for traffic staff and increased deployment across the city.
The consensus: the festive season’s rush, breakdowns, and bottlenecks have aligned badly. Without emergency relief routes or better planning, many fear this gridlock may intensify as the days approach Diwali.
