During recent high-level discussions between India and Canada, New Delhi delivered a clear signal: any challenge to India’s territorial integrity, including Khalistan-inspired separatism, will no longer be tolerated. The talks focused heavily on counterterrorism, transnational crime, and extradition cooperation especially in cases connected to Sikh separatist groups and extremist funding networks.
India has long maintained that some individuals in Canada support or facilitate extremist activities, and pressures mounted during the dialogue for their repatriation or legal accountability. For its part, Canada’s security establishment, led by National Security Adviser Nathalie Drouin, expressed willingness to engage, paving a path toward normalized ties and renewed trust.
The backdrop includes the recent arrest in Canada of Inderjit Singh Gosal, a key figure tied to the Khalistan Referendum campaign, on firearms charges reinforcing India’s claims that such networks operate across borders. Despite these tensions, both capitals agreed to resume momentum in diplomatic engagement, signaling that security imperatives and constructive cooperation can coexist.
This episode underscores how India is increasingly asserting its red lines in foreign diplomacy: sovereignty, legal accountability, and the principle that foreign soil should not shelter activities that threaten national unity.
