Leh, Ladakh What began as a steadfast hunger strike and peaceful agitation escalated into violent unrest today around the demand for full statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been fasting for days demanding action, ended his strike amid the chaos. Protesters set fire to the BJP office and a CRPF van, clashed with security forces, and pelted stones. Tragically, at least four people lost their lives and tens were injured as the tense scenes unfolded.
The movement led by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and supported by youth activists centres on demands not met since Ladakh’s reorganisation in 2019, when it became a Union Territory without a legislature. Protesters argue that the delay in granting statehood or constitutional safeguards like Sixth Schedule status has left Ladakh politically marginalized, with weak local autonomy and limited protection for identity, environment, and land rights. Wangchuk called the violence “an outburst of Gen Z,” saying that accumulated frustration and unmet promises fuelled the mass action.
Authorities imposed curfews and bans on public gatherings. Talks have been scheduled between local leaders and the central government in early October, though protesters demand faster resolution, saying patience has worn thin. This turning point underscores the high stakes behind constitutional recognition, regional identity, and youth alienation especially where promises remain unfulfilled.
