Multiple airlines have reported “severe” GPS spoofing over the Delhi region for about seven consecutive days, prompting a government inquiry into the unprecedented disruption. The interference—traditionally confined to border areas such as the India-Pakistan frontier—was flagged by pilots and air-traffic controllers operating into and out of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) and adjoining airspace.
According to industry sources, the spoofing compromised satellite navigation signals, misleading aircraft systems and adding significant workload on pilots and controllers. The disruption coincided with changing easterly winds and VIP aircraft movements, which further exacerbated runway capacity constraints. A 2024 industry work-group report had already documented daily spoofing over the Delhi FIR and nearby Lahore FIR, underscoring the region’s vulnerability.
Government agencies are now investigating the source of the signals, and aviation safety regulators are reviewing contingency procedures and conventional navigation back-ups to mitigate future occurrences.
