Google Maps is rolling out a major update in India, introducing 10 new India-first features aimed at making navigation safer and more intuitive, the company announced.
Among the highlights: alerting drivers as they approach accident-prone areas, based on data from local traffic authorities, initially in regions such as Gurugram, Cyberabad, Chandigarh and Faridabad. In addition, the app will display official speed limits alongside the speedometer when navigating, starting in nine Indian cities including Mumbai, Kolkata, Lucknow and Jaipur.
Also debuting is proactive traffic-alerting — meaning even when users are not actively navigating, the app can notify them of major disruptions ahead on roadways in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Alongside safety, the update introduces conversational driving features powered by the company’s AI assistant, allowing hands-free requests and smarter route assistance.
With this rollout, Google Maps is addressing India’s unique commuting landscape — from high incidents at “black spots” to complex urban traffic — and steering towards a smarter, safer travel experience for millions of users.
