To improve pedestrian safety and ease traffic congestion, Delhi is set to construct a third skywalk at Madhuban Chowk-one of the city’s most accident-prone intersections. The location, which sees massive footfall due to its proximity to Rohini Court, Pitampura market, and a nearby mall, has been identified as a blackspot with a high number of traffic accidents and fatalities-reportedly around 10 every year between 2020 and 2023.
Initially, the Public Works Department (PWD) proposed an 800-meter-long foot overbridge linking the two Pitampura Metro corridors. However, the plan has since shifted to a more comprehensive skywalk project. The new skywalk will connect the Rohini Court with the Pitampura Metro station on the Red Line, while an additional segment will extend to an upcoming Pink Line station between Janakpuri West and R.K. Ashram. A third arm will connect the skywalk to the road junction leading toward Prashant Vihar and Wazirpur.
The project is estimated to cost ₹17.5 crore. A proposal has been submitted to hand over construction responsibilities to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which is already handling Phase IV of the Metro expansion in the area. Once approved by the minister, PWD will provide the necessary budget for execution.
If completed, this will be Delhi’s third skywalk, following the ones at ITO and South Campus. The initiative marks a significant move toward pedestrian-friendly infrastructure in high-risk urban zones.
