The Trump administration has unveiled a controversial new policy offering $1,000 to illegal immigrants who voluntarily return to their home countries, the Associated Press reported. Announced by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, the initiative aims to promote “self-deportation” as the safest and most cost-effective method to leave the U.S. and avoid potential arrest.
Through the CBP Home App, migrants can apply for financial travel assistance along with the $1,000 stipend. Immigration enforcement and mass deportations have been pivotal to Trump's campaign rhetoric, but the logistical and financial burden of forcibly removing migrants has long strained U.S. resources. The new approach appears to be a strategic shift to reduce deportation costs while encouraging voluntary exits.
While supporters tout it as pragmatic, critics argue it raises ethical concerns and question its effectiveness. As the 2025 election season heats up, immigration policy is once again at the forefront of American political debate.
