What if a survey designed to address workplace stress ended with mass layoffs? This isn’t a hypothetical scenario but a real one!
YesMadam, a Noida-based beauty startup recently laid off more than 60% of its workforce, citing a shift toward a tech-enabled marketplace model. This dramatic pivot is part of the company’s strategy to empower beauty professionals to run their businesses with reduced commission rates, currently at just 8%. CEO Mayank Arya claims this approach aligns with the company’s expansion goals, including scaling to 100 cities and achieving ₹200 crore in annual revenue by FY2026.
A social media post from an affected employee alleged that over 100 workers were suddenly dismissed after participating in a company survey intended to measure stress levels. The employee, who identified as one of those terminated, expressed shock and frustration, questioning the rationale behind the company’s decision. In response, competitors like Magicpin stepped in to recruit some of these workers, showcasing industry solidarity in a challenging moment.
After a huge backlash from the industry as well as netizens, Yes Madam has addressed the controversy surrounding the alleged mass layoffs tied to its workplace stress survey. The company issued an official statement over social media stating “No one was fired at YesMadam!”
The discrepancy has fuelled ongoing discussions online, as some critics continue to question the company’s internal practices despite its denial. The incident underscores the importance of clear communication and transparency during organizational changes.
