The Indian government is preparing to introduce an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, scheduled from July 21 to August 12, 2025. This action follows a Supreme Court-appointed panel's findings of corruption against Justice Varma, particularly concerning an alleged cash seizure incident at his official residence.
Union Ministers are actively engaging with key political leaders to build a consensus for the motion. While the government expresses confidence in securing parliamentary support, several opposition parties are demanding the disclosure of the Supreme Court panel's findings before committing their backing.
The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has welcomed the proposed impeachment, viewing it as a step toward reinforcing public trust in judicial accountability. If Justice Varma does not resign and maintains his claim of innocence, he may become the first judge to be removed through a parliamentary motion, marking a significant moment in India's judicial and political history.
