Fur Real: India’s Pet Revolution Turns Paws into Family Members!

The way pets are cared for in India is changing. Previously, people kept pets merely as house companions, but now, among Gen Z and millennials, pets are regarded as integral family members. This shift has significantly impacted the pet care industry, transforming it from basic needs to a large-scale market.

According to Mars Petcare, 66% of Indian Gen Z and millennials believe their pets are the most important part of their lives, a figure that surpasses the global average of 47%. For the first time in India, the number of pet owners is increasing, with 70% of pet owners being first-time pet parents.

Dogs remain the most popular pets, but the popularity of cats is also on the rise. Cats are easier to care for and fit comfortably into urban living. However, city dwellers face challenges in keeping pets, such as limited space and a lack of pet-friendly areas. Companies are addressing these issues with solutions like indoor potty setups and travel accessories that simplify life for pet owners.

There has also been a shift in pet diets. While homemade food was once the norm, many now opt for scientifically-backed, balanced diet packaged foods. This change ensures that pets receive better nutrition and health care.

The pet care market is no longer limited to food; it now includes veterinary care, grooming, and even luxury spa services. Many companies, such as Mars Petcare, are running initiatives like "Better Cities for Pets" to make urban areas more pet-friendly. Additionally, campaigns like "Indie Proud" encourage people to adopt and care for pets.

Pets are increasingly viewed as companions rather than property. This societal change reflects a new perspective on how we perceive pets. Alongside this shift, responsible pet ownership education has become crucial to ensure proper care and dispel misconceptions about pet nutrition, such as the belief that homemade food is always better.

The pet care industry is rapidly growing, promising even better outcomes for pets and their owners in the future. In this "paw-positive" era, every day becomes more joyful with a beloved companion by your side.
