The death of Ramachandra Reddy Gari Pratap Reddy, also known as Chalapati, in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh, has created significant unrest in his hometown in Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. Chalapati, a prominent Maoist leader and Odisha secretary for the group, was a major figure in the Maoist movement, with a ₹1 crore bounty on his head.
Born in Matyam Paipalle village, Chalapati's early life was unremarkable. He pursued postgraduate studies and worked in the Sericulture Department before encountering Maoist factions during his tenure in Visakhapatnam. Gradually, he rose through the ranks, becoming a key leader known for his ability to evade law enforcement. His notoriety grew after he escaped an encounter in the Visakha Agency area.
Chalapati's family distanced themselves due to his association with the Maoist movement. His elder brother, Chandrasekhar Reddy, remains employed in the Sericulture Department in Madanapalle, part of Annamayya district. Locals recall that the family abandoned their ancestral home years ago, avoiding the repercussions of Chalapati's activities.
Security experts view Chalapati's death as a significant victory against the Maoist insurgency. His influence in the agency areas had bolstered the group's operations, but his demise is expected to weaken their foothold.
While the Maoist movement has been losing ground in recent years, Chalapati's death underscores the persistent threat posed by the group. Security forces continue their efforts to neutralize remaining strongholds in affected regions.
