The Union government's high-level committee, established to investigate US allegations of a foiled assassination plot against Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, has submitted its report recommending legal action against an unnamed individual. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced the findings on Tuesday, emphasizing the inquiry's thoroughness and international collaboration.
The investigation followed inputs from US authorities implicating Vikash Yadav, a former Indian official, in orchestrating the alleged plot. Yadav, previously indicted by a US prosecutor for directing an attempt to assassinate Pannun in New York City, is no longer employed by the Indian government, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The committee, formed in November 2023, collaborated with US counterparts, including a visit to Washington, DC, to exchange evidence and updates. It also examined multiple officials and scrutinized relevant documents, receiving full cooperation from US authorities.
The report recommends swift legal action against an individual whose prior criminal connections were uncovered during the inquiry. Additionally, it proposes systemic improvements to bolster India's response to such issues, including enhanced procedural controls and coordinated inter-agency efforts.
This investigation follows heightened scrutiny of India's role in international incidents, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's earlier claims regarding the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which India dismissed as unfounded. The Pannun case underscores the importance of cross-border cooperation in addressing sensitive geopolitical matters and mitigating the risks posed by rogue elements.
