As temperatures rise, nutrition becomes crucial in staying cool and hydrated. According to Edwina Raj, clinical nutritionist at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, certain foods can worsen dehydration and fatigue in summer.
1. High-Salt Foods: Processed snacks and fast food can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance due to their high sodium content.
2. Heavy and Greasy Meals: Fried and oily foods increase body temperature and slow digestion, making you feel sluggish.
3. Sugary Beverages: These may seem refreshing but cause a blood sugar spike followed by a crash, leading to tiredness.
Better Alternatives:
Opt for water-rich fruits like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges. Include fermented foods like buttermilk, yogurt, and smoothies for gut health. Lean proteins such as grilled fish or chicken and whole grains like quinoa or barley provide sustained energy without the heat burden.
Smart food choices during summer can keep you cool, energized, and healthy.
