The Adani Group has renamed Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL), the special purpose vehicle overseeing the redevelopment of one of Asia’s largest slums, to Navbharat Mega Developers Private Limited (NMDPL). This move has drawn criticism from the Dharavi Bachao Andolan (DBA), an organization representing the slum’s residents.
The Adani Group explained that the rebranding aligns with its vision to build a modern, inclusive, and vibrant community. The company stated that the name change reflects a fresh approach and its commitment to creating a better future for all those involved in or benefiting from the slum rehabilitation project. The statement emphasized that this initiative is part of the broader task of rehabilitating slums nationwide.
However, Raju Korde, coordinator of DBA, dismissed the renaming as inconsequential, pointing out that Navbharat Mega Developers was already an existing company established by Adani in August 2023. He expressed concerns that this change could lead to a shift in how the project is perceived, with potential consequences for the residents of Dharavi. He warned that this could lead to changes in the community's identity, including the risk of new address reassignments.
Adani Group clarified that the renaming does not affect the government’s role or the project’s core objectives, nor does it alter the purpose of the redevelopment, which is aimed at improving Dharavi’s infrastructure.
