"Gaali do yaar mast" - doctor’s unusual hack to fight period pain!

Period pain is something almost every woman experiences, and while some find comfort in hot water bottles, chocolates, or medicines, others struggle to get through the cramps. But can something as simple as swearing really help?

Dr Tanaya Narendra, popularly known as Dr Cuterus, recently shared on a podcast that “gaali dena” (cursing) can actually reduce pain. Backing her point, she cited studies, including a famous 2009 experiment at Keele University, where participants who were allowed to curse kept their hands in ice-cold water for 30 seconds longer than others. The reason: swearing helps release aggression, boosts endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers), and increases pain tolerance.

Clinical psychologist Neha Parashar agrees that swearing activates the limbic system, which releases adrenaline and endorphins, giving a temporary sense of pain relief. Psychologically too, it provides emotional release, making women feel more in control.

However, experts warn that while swearing may help in the moment, it should not replace medical treatment. Regular exercise, hydration, heat therapy, yoga, and stress management remain vital for menstrual health. And if pain is severe, consulting a doctor is always necessary.
