Instagram recently introduced a new feature called “Instants”, which allows users to send disappearing photos directly through DMs. The feature is designed for quick and spontaneous sharing, similar to Snapchat-like photo messaging. However, many users are now complaining after accidentally sharing photos without fully understanding how the feature works.
The feature appears as a small photo stack inside Instagram inboxes. Once users tap and capture a picture, it can instantly get shared with friends or close friends. Since the process is extremely quick, many people online say they accidentally posted random selfies or private moments.
To disable the feature:
- Open Instagram
- Go to your Profile
- Tap the three-line menu
- Open Content Preferences
- Turn on “Hide Instants in Inbox”
After enabling this option, Instants will disappear from the inbox. Users can also temporarily mute the feature by holding the Instants icon and swiping right.
Instagram says the feature is meant to encourage more real-time and casual sharing. Photos disappear after being viewed and automatically expire after 24 hours. Users also cannot directly screenshot Instants through the app.
Despite the idea behind it, many users believe the feature feels confusing and unnecessary because accidental sharing has become increasingly common since the update launched.
