Torrential monsoon rains lashed Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district from the night of June 30 to July 1, triggering a series of devastating cloudbursts and flash floods. Official figures reveal at least 10 people killed and 34 still missing in the region deemed the epicenter of the disaster . Over a span of 32 hours, the district experienced approximately 16 cloudbursts and three flash floods, primarily affecting the Thunag, Karsog, and Gohar subdivisions.
Rescue operations are intensifying, with over 300 people evacuated from Mandi alone and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams deployed across multiple zones . The downpour has washed away homes, submerged roads, damaged bridges and disrupted power and communications infrastructure - over 400 roads blocked statewide .
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Himachal and neighboring regions, urging residents in vulnerable zones to remain indoors and adhere to evacuation orders. As the rescue effort continues, urgent calls for relief, safe shelter, and infrastructure repair are being ramped up.
