IIIT-Bangalore’s COMET Foundation is developing Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) - essentially smart panels that can redirect radio waves, extend signal reach, and improve quality in wireless networks. RIS helps overcome limitations of base stations at higher frequency bands, which often suffer from reduced coverage in 5G-Advanced and anticipated 6G settings.
One of the major benefits is backward compatibility: these panels can be integrated into existing 5G-Advanced infrastructures without needing a full overhaul. That means faster deployment and cost savings, while also preparing the ground for higher-data-rate, lower latency 6G use cases.
IIIT-B is working on both hardware prototypes and algorithmic solutions like channel estimation and ML-based scheduling for RIS-aided communication systems. They are also building a testbed lab for 5G use-cases spanning urban management and health, engaging students and startups to participate.
As India pushes forward with NM-ICPS projects and the National Mission on Advanced Communications, RIS technology from IIIT-B promises to play a key role in making next-gen wireless networks more efficient, resilient, and wide-reaching.
