Ophthalmologists caution that common eye makeup habits can silently harm your vision, leading to conditions like conjunctivitis, dry eye, allergic reactions, and corneal abrasions.
Key Risks Identified :-
- Expired or Shared Products: Mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow can harbor bacteria after 3–6 months. Sharing makeup accelerates infection risk.
- Applying on Waterline or Lash Line: Tightlining blocks meibomian glands, disrupting tear film balance and triggering dry eye and styes.
- Corneal Injuries: Mascara wands or eyeliners can scratch the cornea, leading to painful abrasions or infections.
- Glitter and Loose Powders: Fallout particles can enter the eye, causing irritation or corneal scratches.
- Harsh Ingredients: Preservatives, synthetic fragrances, parabens, or heavy metals may irritate or inflame the eye’s surface over repeated use.
- Sleeping in Makeup: Failing to remove makeup overnight clogs oil glands, increases bacterial growth, and may trigger blepharitis or pink eye.
- Dirty Tools or Improper Removers: Makeup brushes should be cleaned weekly; use gentle, oil-free removal agents to prevent irritation.
Prevention Tips :
- Avoid tightlining and glitter; apply liner above lash line only.
- Replace products regularly: mascara every 3 months, eyeliner every 6 months, shadows within 6–12 months.
- Never share eye makeup or brushes.
- Remove all makeup before bedtime using hypoallergenic removers.
