External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has categorically denied that any phone call occurred between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump between April 22—following the Pahalgam terror attack—and June 17, the day the India‑Pakistan ceasefire was officially announced. His statement, made during a Lok Sabha debate on Operation Sindoor, was aimed at refuting Trump’s repeated claims that Washington brokered the ceasefire and had used trade incentives as leverage.
Jaishankar insisted that at no point during discussions with U.S. officials was trade used as a condition for peace. Instead, the ceasefire resulted from direct communication between the two nations’ Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs), acting on Pakistan’s initiative.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also addressed the claims in Parliament, affirming that India did not succumb to any external pressure in ending its military action. He said the conflict was paused only after India achieved its political and military objectives—not because of U.S. involvement.
Meanwhile, both the BJP and the opposition sparred over the narrative. BJP leaders accused rivals of lacking confidence in India’s diplomacy, while Congress leaders questioned the government’s handling of the Pahalgam crisis.
