Salt is essential for the body, helping regulate fluid balance, nerve signaling, and muscle function. However, consuming excessive amounts can lead to serious health risks. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), adults should limit their salt intake to less than 5 grams per day (about 2,000 mg of sodium). Dr. Rakesh Gupta, Senior Consultant – Internal Medicine, recommends a daily intake of 1,500–2,300 mg of sodium to maintain good health.
Immediate Effects of High Salt Intake:
Increased Thirst: Excessive salt disrupts fluid balance, leading to dehydration and intense thirst.
Water Retention: The kidneys retain water to balance sodium, causing swelling and puffiness.
Temporary Blood Pressure Rise: Extra sodium increases blood volume, leading to a temporary spike in blood pressure.
Long-Term Health Risks:
Hypertension: Chronic high salt intake contributes to high blood pressure and heart disease.
Kidney Damage: Prolonged excess salt can damage kidneys and worsen kidney conditions.
Bone and Stomach Health: High sodium increases calcium loss, leading to osteoporosis and a higher risk of stomach cancer.
For optimal health, moderate your salt intake and consult healthcare professionals for personalized advice.
