For diabetics, choosing the right footwear can be more significant than it seems. The seemingly innocent choice between flip-flops and sliders might carry hidden risks, turning a casual decision into a crucial one. While flip-flops are popular for their comfort and ease, they can pose unexpected dangers for those with diabetes.
Experts caution against using flip-flops or open-toe shoes, as they can put pressure on parts of the foot, leading to sores and blisters. These minor injuries may go unnoticed, especially in individuals with diabetic peripheral neuropathy—a condition that causes numbness in the feet. The friction caused by the strap between the big toe and second toe can result in wounds that may become infected, a risk often overlooked.
The hazards don’t end there. Open-toe footwear also makes it easy for small stones or gravel to slip inside, further increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, wearing flip-flops often causes the smaller toes to claw as the body instinctively tries to grip the footwear while walking, which can lead to foot deformities over time. Even sliders, despite offering more coverage, are prone to slipping off, posing similar challenges.
So, what is the safer choice? Footwear with a secure strap around the heel is recommended, as it holds the shoe firmly in place during movement. Diabetic-friendly shoes typically feature seamless interiors, wide toe boxes, and soft, durable inner soles. Laced shoes are also a good option, offering better support and stability.
Experts suggest trying on shoes at the end of the day when feet are slightly swollen. This ensures a more accurate fit, reducing the chance of discomfort later. It’s also wise to keep two pairs of supportive shoes to alternate between, allowing them to dry out and maintain their durability. For diabetics, careful footwear selection can be a vital step toward avoiding unexpected health issues.
