An escalating conflict between Israel and Iran entered its fourth day on June 16, marked by significant airstrikes targeting Iran’s media infrastructure and military command centers. An Israeli airstrike struck the Iranian state TV headquarters during a live broadcast, plunging the studio into darkness, scattering debris, and setting the building ablaze.
Iranian Ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, condemned the attack as a "direct assault on press freedom," while accusing Israel of being the "foremost enemy of truth". Iran reports more than 220 civilians killed, including 20 children, and over 1,000 injured since the offensive began. Israel, meanwhile, cites at least 24 civilian deaths and nearly 600 injuries from Iranian retaliatory strikes.
The Israeli military defended the strike, alleging that the TV building was being used by the Iranian Armed Forces to mask military operations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted the strike had significantly set back Iran's nuclear program and emphasized that more targets remain, while Israel’s ambassador to the UN said the campaign would continue until Iran's nuclear capabilities were dismantled.
President Trump, attending the G7 summit, noted that Iran has expressed interest in de-escalation through intermediaries but insisted any negotiations must happen immediately.
