A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread destruction and panic across China, Thailand, Vietnam, and India. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported the epicenter 16 km northwest of Sagaing at a depth of 10 km.
In Bangkok, Thailand, the tremors at 1:21 PM local time caused an under-construction high-rise to collapse, killing at least three workers and trapping over 80 people under the rubble. Myanmar reported at least three more deaths, including worshippers crushed under a collapsed mosque.
Social media footage showed terrified residents running onto the streets as alarms blared and buildings swayed. Tourist Fraser Morton described the chaos: “Suddenly, the whole building moved people screamed and ran.”
As emergency teams race to find survivors, officials warn of potential aftershocks. The true scale of destruction is still unfolding.
