On Ambedkar Jayanti, remember his story, it's a legacy that lives on!

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's life and work offer a profound lens through which to understand the complexities of Dalit politics in India. Born into the "untouchable" Mahar caste, Ambedkar faced systemic discrimination, which fueled his determination to challenge the entrenched social order. His approach differed markedly from other Dalit leaders and Bhakti saints of his time; rather than seeking reform within Hinduism, he aimed to liberate Dalits from its constraints. This perspective is elucidated in Christophe Jaffrelot's book, Dr. Ambedkar and Untouchability, which delves into Ambedkar's strategies and ideologies.

Ambedkar's early involvement in the temple entry movement was not driven by a desire for acceptance within Hinduism but served as a strategic entry point into political activism for the "untouchables." This tactic highlights his pragmatic approach to leveraging existing structures to advance the rights and recognition of Dalits. His eventual conversion to Buddhism in 1956, along with millions of his followers, was both a personal and political statement, symbolizing a break from a history of oppression.

By examining Ambedkar's life and choices, we gain valuable insights into the evolution of Dalit politics and the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in India. He saw traditional practices as obstacles to modernisation. Jaffrelot's book also talks about the conditions of successful Dalit mobilisation and that it requires an immersion in the tenets of modernity. These are some of his ideas amongst many that remain relevant. Ambedkar’s exemplary life is important to Dalits and caste liberation even today.
