Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured during an official state visit to Accra, becoming the first Indian leader in over 30 years to receive the Order of the Star of Ghana—the country’s highest national distinction. Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, conferred the “Officer” grade (OSG) in recognition of Modi’s contributions to strengthening bilateral relations.
The multi-day Ghana visit marks a diplomatic high point following decades of limited Indian leadership presence. Modi’s itinerary includes meetings with President Mahama, an address to Ghana’s Parliament, and signing a series of strategic agreements in trade, infrastructure, education, health, and digital development.
The Order of the Star of Ghana, established in 1960, honours exceptional service to the nation. Although now the second-highest national award, it remains one of the most prestigious accolades Ghana can bestow upon foreign dignitaries. Modi joins a distinguished list of global leaders who have received this recognition, including heads of state from Brazil, Ivory Coast, and Kenya.
