Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday (July 10, 2025) called for a united effort to save Nimisha Priya, an Indian nurse on death row in Yemen, scheduled to be executed on July 16. Mufti appealed to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to intervene urgently and urged Indian women to contribute blood money - a traditional form of compensation that could lead to her release, according to Yemeni law.
Mufti described Priya’s situation as a humanitarian crisis, pointing out that the 36-year-old from Kerala is facing a death penalty over allegations she killed a Yemeni national amid claims of enduring years of abuse . Priya’s legal defense and Indian officials have emphasized the need for diplomatic negotiations and financial diplomacy to delay or halt her execution.
With just days left before the execution date, public supporters and political leaders are advocating for swift action - leveraging legal channels, diplomatic negotiations, and community fundraising - to ensure Priya's life is spared.
