No pay, long hours: The harsh truth of Indian internships!

Thousands of students across India continue to work unpaid internships, even in elite companies, media houses, think tanks, and government bodies. Lured by brand names and the promise of “exposure,” they end up contributing real work-sometimes to high-stakes projects without any compensation.

Why does this system still exist? It thrives on prestige, inequality, and lack of formal regulation. Students from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, or modest financial backgrounds, face the harshest realities-paying for rent, travel, and food, while working for free. Many are forced to skip such internships altogether, widening the opportunity gap.

Mental health issues, burnout, and guilt also take a toll as interns juggle full-time responsibilities with studies and emotional pressure. Even a small stipend-₹3,000 to ₹5,000-could significantly ease their burden, showing respect for their work.

Yet, unpaid internships persist, often disguised as a “chance to grow.” Experts say the system won’t change unless legislation mandates minimum stipends, institutions take accountability, and students start valuing their own worth.

The big question remains: Should students choose between learning and livelihood? Or is it time to pay them what they deserve?
