The monsoon season, while refreshing, often leads to various skin issues due to increased humidity and dampness. Dr. Pranjal Joshi, a dermatologist at Varsity Skin & Wellness Clinic, highlights common skin conditions during this time, including fungal infections like Tinea Cruris (jock itch), Tinea Corporis (ringworm), and candidal infections, especially in skin folds. Other prevalent issues are folliculitis, contact dermatitis from wet clothes or artificial jewelry, miliaria (prickly heat), and eczema flare-ups.
To maintain healthy skin during the monsoon, Dr. Joshi recommends :
- Wearing loose, breathable cotton clothing to absorb sweat and allow the skin to breathe.
- Thoroughly drying the body, especially skin folds, after exposure to rain or sweat.
- Opting for sandals over closed shoes; if shoes are necessary, change socks twice daily and apply antifungal powder.
- Taking a warm shower after sweating to remove dirt and bacteria.
- Using lightweight, gel-based moisturizers on damp skin post-bathing.
Avoid scratching itchy areas to prevent further irritation, and refrain from using harsh soaps or scrubs that can damage the skin barrier. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy the monsoon while keeping your skin healthy and radiant.
