With India’s healthcare sector growing rapidly, doctors are under far more than clinical pressure. Rising patient volumes, increasing awareness of patient rights, and growing litigiousness mean that even small errors can lead to large legal, financial, or reputational loss.
The first line of defence is Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII), which guards against malpractice suits. PII helps cover legal fees, settlements, and compensation payout and ideally includes retroactive coverage to protect against past claims. Next, it's not just individuals who need protection medical establishments (clinics, diagnostic centres, hospitals) should insure themselves against lawsuits arising from employee actions, as well as nagging operational risks.
Beyond indemnity, doctors are increasingly being advised to get asset insurance (for equipment and infrastructure), health insurance (for themselves), disability insurance (for when illness or injury prevents work), and cyber insurance (to handle data breaches, digital negligence, or theft).
The article’s big message: in today’s changing medical landscape, clinical skill alone isn’t enough to survive. Doctors who proactively build a safety net with the right insurance can preserve their practice, reputation, and financial health and focus better on patient care.
