In the early hours of Friday, May 2, 2025, Delhi and its surrounding regions were struck by intense rainfall and thunderstorms, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the capital. The severe weather conditions led to widespread disruptions across the city.

The IMD reported that the storm system brought gusty winds ranging from 40 to 90 km/h, with areas like Pragati Maidan recording wind speeds of 78 km/h. Rainfall measurements varied across the city, with Safdarjung receiving 60 mm, Pitampura 40 mm, and Palam 30.6 mm.

The heavy downpour resulted in significant waterlogging in several parts of Delhi, including the Dwarka underpass, leading to traffic congestion and disruptions. Flight operations at Delhi airport were also affected, with passengers advised to check with airlines for updates on delays.

In response to the severe weather, the IMD issued advisories warning of potential hazards such as broken tree branches, uprooted trees, damage to crops and plantations, power outages, and communication disruptions. Residents were urged to remain indoors, avoid travel, and stay away from trees, water bodies, and metal surfaces.

The sudden storm also brought a noticeable drop in temperature, with readings falling from a nighttime low of 26.8°C on Thursday to around 19°C by Friday morning, offering temporary relief from the recent heatwave.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, advising citizens to stay updated on weather forecasts and exercise caution during this period of adverse weather conditions.
