Imagine playing a video game and actually tasting the food your character eats. This could soon happen with a new invention called "e-Taste." Scientists in Britain have created a device that can digitally copy and share flavors in just a few seconds. This could make virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) experiences more exciting.
According to The Guardian, this technology works in two steps. First, an "electronic tongue" studies the main taste chemicals in food or drinks. These include sweet (sugar), sour (lemon), salty (salt), bitter (coffee), and umami (meaty flavor). Then, a special delivery system uses a small pump to send these flavors to your tongue through a straw-like tube.
Scientists at Ohio State University tested this invention with volunteers. In one test, people correctly guessed different sour flavors 70% of the time. In another test, they correctly matched flavors like lemonade, cake, fried egg, coffee, and fish soup 87% of the time.
However, this invention cannot copy spicy or fatty flavors yet. But researchers are working on making it better. In the future, you may be able to taste food while playing a game or exploring virtual worlds!
This could change the way we experience entertainment. Imagine eating virtual pizza while playing a game, would you try it?
