Historically, March 12 stands as one of the most transformative dates in India’s struggle for independence. In 1930, Mahatma Gandhi embarked on the Salt Satyagraha, a 240-mile trek from Sabarmati Ashram to the coastal village of Dandi.

Significant Historical Milestones

• The Dandi March Begins (1930): Mahatma Gandhi, aged 60, began his 24-day march with 78 followers. This 387-km journey was a protest against the salt tax, which heavily burdened the poor. It culminated on April 6, when Gandhi symbolically picked up a handful of salt, sparking a nationwide wave of civil disobedience.

• Sahitya Akademi Inaugurated (1954): The Government of India established the Sahitya Akademi, the National Academy of Letters. Dedicated to the promotion of literature in the 24 recognized Indian languages, it remains the highest authority for literary honors in the country.

• 1993 Bombay Bombings: On this day, a series of 12 coordinated bomb blasts rocked Mumbai (then Bombay), resulting in 257 fatalities and over 700 injuries. It remains one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in Indian history.

• Mauritius Independence (1968): While an international event, this holds deep significance in India due to the strong cultural and diaspora ties. March 12 is celebrated as the National Day of Mauritius, marking its independence from British rule.

Notable Birthdays on March 12

• Yashwantrao Balwantrao (Y.B.) Chavan (1913): The first Chief Minister of Maharashtra and the fifth Deputy Prime Minister of India. He was a key figure in the formation of the modern state of Maharashtra.

• Shreya Ghoshal (1984): One of India's most celebrated playback singers, known for her versatility and four National Film Awards.

• Atif Aslam (1983): Though born in Pakistan, his massive contributions to Indian cinema music have made him a household name across the subcontinent.

• Vidyut Jammwal (1980): Popular action star and martial artist known for his "Kalaripayattu" expertise in Bollywood.

• Falguni Pathak (1964): The "Dandiya Queen" of India, whose folk and pop music are synonymous with Navratri celebrations.
