The Force Behind the Rehabilitation of People with Leprosy!

Today marks the 18th anniversary of the passing of Baba Amte (February 9, 2008). His journey remains a powerful testament to the triumph of compassion over fear. Born into a wealthy Brahmin family in 1914, Amte’s turning point came when he encountered Tulshiram, a man in the advanced stages of leprosy. The sight initially filled him with terror, but he soon realized that "the most frightening disease is not leprosy, but the loss of the capacity to feel for others."

Key Pillars of His Legacy:

• Anandwan (Forest of Bliss): Established in 1949 with just six patients and 14 rupees, this barren patch of land in Maharashtra was transformed into a thriving 450-acre co-operative. Today, it is home to over 5,000 residents who are self-sufficient in food, clothing, and energy.

• Challenging the Stigma: At a time when leprosy was viewed as a curse, Amte famously injected himself with bacilli from a patient to prove to the world that the disease was not highly contagious.

• "Work Builds, Charity Destroys": This was his core philosophy. He rejected the idea of leprosy patients as "beggars," instead training them in agriculture, carpentry, and textiles. By making them productive members of society, he restored their lost self-respect.

• Beyond Leprosy: His activism extended to the Bharat Jodo Abhiyan (Knit India Movement), where he cycled from Kanyakumari to Kashmir to promote national unity, and his significant involvement in the Narmada Bachao Andolan to protect tribal rights and the environment.

Major Accolades:

• Padma Vibhushan (1986)

• Ramon Magsaysay Award (1985)

• Gandhi Peace Prize (1999)

• United Nations Human Rights Prize (1988)

• Templeton Prize (1990)

The Living Legacy:

The work of Baba Amte continues today through his sons, Dr. Vikas Amte (managing Anandwan) and Dr. Prakash Amte (leading the Lok Biradari Prakalp for tribal health), ensuring that the "Forest of Bliss" remains a beacon of hope for the underprivileged.
