A growing number of Indian women are getting trapped in a dangerous online scam that begins with something as harmless as a random friend request. Scammers create polished profiles-often posing as doctors, NRIs, or foreign professionals-to look trustworthy. Their messages are friendly, respectful, and emotionally engaging, making women feel comfortable enough to continue the conversation.
Once trust is built, the scammer shifts the chat to WhatsApp and insists on video calls. But there’s a catch: their face is never visible, always hidden behind excuses like poor network. Soon, they claim to have sent a “special gift” packed with expensive items.
The real trouble begins when a supposed “customs officer” calls, accusing the woman of receiving illegal items or foreign currency. Threats of FIRs, arrests, and public shame push victims into panic, forcing them to pay large amounts to “settle the case”.
Cyber experts warn that this scam is spreading rapidly because it plays on emotions, fear, and trust. Women are urged to verify profiles, avoid unknown requests, and report any suspicious activity immediately.
Staying alert is the only shield. One message can change everything.
