It usually starts the same way for everyone. You see someone online talking about “multiple income streams.” Passive income. Financial freedom. And suddenly, your one job doesn’t feel like enough anymore. So you pick up a side hustle.
At first, it feels exciting. You’re doing something productive after hours, maybe learning a new skill, maybe even making a little extra money. It feels like you’re getting ahead while everyone else is just… resting. But slowly, something shifts. Your free time disappears. Evenings turn into work hours. Weekends don’t feel like weekends anymore. And instead of feeling empowered, you just feel… tired. Because what no one really tells you is this, most side hustles aren’t “passive.”
They’re just another job. One that doesn’t come with fixed hours, clear boundaries, or even guaranteed pay. You’re always “on,” always thinking about what to do next, what to improve, what you’re not doing enough of. And it becomes hard to switch off.
The problem isn’t the idea of earning more. It’s the pressure behind it. This constant feeling that if you’re not monetising your time, you’re falling behind. So rest starts feeling like guilt. And suddenly, you’re not working for freedom anymore. You’re working all the time. That’s the part people don’t post about.
Because yes, side hustles can work. They can open doors, build skills, even turn into something bigger. But not when they take over your life. Not when you forget what it feels like to just exist without needing to be productive. Maybe the real flex isn’t having five income streams. Maybe it’s having time, energy, and a life that doesn’t feel like one long to-do list.
